Following the decision of the United States to close the Chinese consulate in the city of Houston, the Chinese government – in reciprocity – has ordered the closure of the US consulate in Chengdu.

Tensions between China and the United States had already been on the rise in recent months. Notably, the Trump administration has seen clashes with China over matters of trade and the coronavirus pandemic.

China’s foreign ministry stated that the decision to close the US Consulate was due to the interference by US staff members in China’s internal affairs, claiming that these actions had endangered its security and interests.

According to the editor of China’s Global Times, the US has until Monday to close its Chengdu consulate.
