The current British ambassador to China, Dame Barbara Woodward, has been appointed as the next permanent representative to the United Nations for the UK.
In addition to her role as British ambassador to China, Dame Barbara Woodward has experience in many Foreign Office roles since 1994, including her past role as the UK Border Force's international director.
Dame Barbara will be stepping into the shoes of Dame Karen Pierce, the former permanent representative, who is moving into the role of ambassador to the US. This new appointment makes Dame Barbara the second woman to hold the position of the UK's most senior UN diplomat.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab touted her "formidable intellect and dynamic diplomatic skills" in stating he was confident that Dame Barbara would "deliver for Britain, and forge the cooperation we need with our international partners to tackle the toughest global challenges we face".
